The Science of Smell Killers

When you buy an original Zielonka Smellkiller you’ve made the best decision when it comes to eliminating bad odours. We would like to help you get the best out of your Smellkiller with a few tips and tricks listed below.

1. Setting up and Instructions

The very first time

Before using the Smellkiller for the very first time, remember to wash it thoroughly under warm running water with a fat-soluble detergent, or place it in the dishwasher ready for the next load.
Tip: When you use the Smellkiller for the first time, please give it 5-6 hours to develop its full effectiveness. But that only applies for the first time! Afterwards the Smellkiller is constantly at work providing you with fresh air. After you have washed the Smellkiller, place it in its bowl and fill with just enough water so that the entire top surface of the Smellkiller is not covered and remains in contact with air.
Tip: Don’t turn your Smellkiller into a submarine! One of the top surfaces must remain in continuous contact with air, otherwise the Smellkiller won’t work. Please remember not to submerge your Smellkiller under water.

All about water

In addition to using tap water, you can also use distilled water without a problem.
By the way: Your pets can safely drink the water from the Smellkiller’s bowl because it does not release any harmful byproducts.
Tip: By putting a dash of vinegar or a squeeze of lemon into the water you’ll slow down the build-up of lime scale.
Tip: Please do not use mineral water to fill the bowl, even if you’re standing right next to it with a bottle open, ready to drink. The high mineral content creates a deposit similar to lime scale and it will create a film on the water that will reduce the Smellkiller’s effectiveness.

How to set up

Basically, you can place the Smellkiller anywhere. It doesn’t matter whether the Smellkiller is placed on the floor, a shelf or on top of a cupboard.
Tip: It makes sense to place the Smellkiller in an accessible location where you can easily control the water level and top it up when required.
Tip: Please do not place your Smellkiller directly on a window ledge or near an open window. It can’t work effectively here. In general, the Smellkiller eliminates odours best when all the room’s windows and doors are closed. If doors or windows are left open, new odour molecules will invade the space that will then need to be neutralized, slowing down the process.
Tip:
Air rooms for short periods only and use the Smellkiller to eliminate bad odours. Would you prefer to place the Smellkiller in your own bowl or in another container? Not a problem!

You can do whatever you like: place the Smellkiller in a small indoor fountain, amongst a bowl of flowers, with floating tea candles; anything that has water in it, that’s when your Smellkiller goes to work. Please remember that the Smellkiller must come into regular contact with water in order to work effectively.
Tip:
Of course the Smellkiller works standing upright as well. If you want to place your Smellkiller upright then go right ahead. It still works.

The right Smellkiller

The Smellkiller XL was especially developed for large rooms such as living rooms or bedrooms up to 646 sq. feet (60 m²). It also works in cellars, work spaces, or in the utilities room. The zilosoap eliminates odours from hands, the zilopet bad odours from pets. You can also use the Classic Smellkiller it in rooms up to 172 sq. feet (16 m²).
Tip:
We offer a wide selection of bowls that fit the Smellkiller XL and the Classic Smellkiller – this way you’ll always find a bowl that suits every home decor.

Flexibility is a winner every time!

If you have a small room with a really stubborn odour then sometimes it’s better to use an “oversized” Smellkiller. One of the staff members of our Zielona Team recently bought a used car that had previously been owned by a retired couple that drove three big dogs around – on the backseat of course. She placed the Smellkiller XL in the car and the smelly problem was soon solved.

But a warning! Only use the Smellkiller XL in a parked car, not while you’re driving! For “other” car odours, try the transport-friendly Car Comfort Smellkiller.
Tip:
Experiment for yourself which Smellkiller has the best results for your smelly problem. However remember that as a rule: a lot helps a lot. The greater the Smellkiller, the greater the result. And if you have some really stubborn odours, well they call for some really drastic measures.
Tip:
For really stubborn odours use two or more Smellkillers. That way you’ll get rid of even the most offensive odours.
Tip:
Use the Smellkiller best suited for the job. We have developed a range of Smellkillers especially suited to removing, for example, odours from dishwashers or shoes. Our range includes the Dishwasher Smellkiller, the WC Smellkiller, the Shoe Smellkiller, the Ashtray Smellkiller and the Refrigerator Smellkiller.

2. Maintenance

Of course you won’t need to bother booking your Smellkiller into the workshop for a re-haul. If you take care of your Smellkiller, it’ll thank you for it and keep working hard, lasting for more than a lifetime.

a. Water level control

The evaporation of water in the Smellkiller bowl is a natural occurrence. In summer when the days heat up or in winter when you turn up the thermostat evaporation can increase – and there’s a danger that the water will evaporate too quickly. That’s why we recommend that you regularly top up the bowl with water.
Tip:
The more water there is in the Smellkiller’s bowl, the better it works. But don’t forget: the Smellkiller is not a submarine, don’t submerge it under water!

b. Lime scale build up and removal

When a white deposit starts to form on your Smellkiller or in the bowl it means that the lime levels in your tap water have definitely left a mark. But it’s so simple to fix: just give your Smellkiller a good thorough cleaning.
Tip:
The Zielonka Rapid Lime Scale Remover is the best product to remove all traces of lime scale from your Smellkiller. But if you’ve got a bottle of concentrated vinegar to hand, that works just as well.

Well, that’s about everything you’ll need to know about caring for your Smellkiller. As soon as you have removed all traces of lime scale and mineral deposits, the Smellkiller will work as effectively as the day you bought it, and it will keep working, for more than a lifetime!
